Evaluation studies for the implementation of S3C tools and guidelines

The S3C active partner InovGrid&InovCity tested S3C tools and guidelines in four different initiatives. The testing was supported by a workshop and several studies conducted by TNS. The results from the workshop and the studies have been used to optimise the respective S3C tools and guidelines.

The Portuguese distribution operator, EDP Distribuição (EDPD) has been pioneering the deployment of the Smart Grids concept, notably through its InovGrid project and the InovCity initiative, and has been evaluating these projects from a technological, social, and economic perspective.
  • InovGrid project: an innovative program designed to address – in an integrated and holistic way – the evolution towards smarter grids, capable of dealing with the rising number of distributed energy resources (DER), the provision of detailed information to the consumer to promote their active involvement in energy efficiency, as well as public lighting control, the integration of the electric vehicle infrastructure and the efficient monitoring of asset condition.
  • InovCity initiative (part of InovGrid project): The first pilot of the InovGrid project was launched before the expansion to seven additional municipalities and had a specific brand: InovCity (Évora InovCity). The InovGrid concept was implemented and evaluated in the city of Évora, representing a ‘living lab’ with more than 35.000 customers. Business case assessment methodologies covering the entire value chain of the smart grid concept were applied, including the evaluation of the addedvalue to communities and society.
The InovGrid project is one of S3C’s trial projects and a unique case as the S3C tools and guidelines were tested at several different test sites and in four different initiatives:
the meter installation initiative
the stakeholder engagement initiative
the gamification initiative
the home energy management initiative

The testing of tools and guidelines in the following four initiatives were supported by a workshop and several studies conducted by TNS. The results from the workshop and the studies have been used to optimise the respective S3C tools and guidelines. The now final version of the S3C toolkit is available at: http://www.smartgrid-engagement-toolkit.eu/. A detailed case study of the implementation of the S3C tools and guidelines in the InovGrid project and the InovCity initiative can be found in the S3C Deliverable 5.2.
